Every restricted-access coastline needs one open door, and on Menorca’s south coast it is Cala Galdana: a full resort bay with actual car parks, restaurants, hotels, pedalos — and, decisively, the trailheads to the wild calas either side.
Galdana as a base, not a compromise
The bay itself is the family option: a deep horseshoe of calm, shallow water behind a wooded gorge — less wild than its neighbours, far more usable with small children or grandparents. But its real power is geographic:
- Cala Mitjana: 15 minutes east on foot.
- Cala Macarella: 30–40 minutes west on the Camí de Cavalls — the legal summer route that isn’t a bus.
- The glass-bottom and taxi boats: small craft work out of Galdana in season, hopping the neighbouring calas.
Park once, see three calas: that is the Galdana formula, and in July–August it beats every driving alternative.
Honest notes
August parking fills too — late morning rather than 9am, but arrive early anyway. The resort front is commercial; walk two minutes to either headland and Menorca returns.
