Cala Macarella — The Car Ban, the Three Ways In & When to Go

Menorca’s most famous cala made a decision most beach towns only threaten: in high season, private cars simply cannot come. Roughly June 1 to September 30, the access road is closed to private vehicles — not “parking is tight”, closed. Plan around that and Macarella is glorious.

The three ways in (summer)

1. Bus 69 from Ciutadella (Torres): about €4.65 each way, ~40 minutes, drop-off near the cala. The workhorse option — buy the early departures in August.
2. On foot from Cala Galdana: the Camí de Cavalls coastal path, 30–40 beautiful minutes over the headland. Park (or bus) to Galdana, walk in, swim, walk back for dinner. The connoisseur’s route.

Macarelleta — the sister worth the extra path

Ten minutes over the western headland lies Cala Macarelleta, smaller, harder to leave, traditionally the quieter swim (and informally clothing-optional). If you made the effort to reach Macarella, make the extra ten minutes.

When to go

• June & September: the ban is on but the crowds are humane. Best overall.
• July–August: beautiful chaos; first bus or boat only.
• October–May: the road reopens to cars, the water cools, and you can have the postcard nearly alone.

The honest checklist
